What to Wear for a Medical Headshot
There is no single dress code for a medical headshot. The best choice depends on where the photo will appear and how you present to patients. Here is a practical way to decide.

Start with LinkedIn’s rule of thumb
LinkedIn advises wearing what you would wear to work, and notes that solid colors tend to do best on camera. For a physician, work clothes might be a white coat, scrubs or business attire, so the answer follows your setting.
Options at a glance
| Attire | Suits | Consider |
|---|---|---|
| White coat | Hospital profiles, patient-facing directories | Clearly signals a clinician; check your employer’s dress or branding policy. |
| Scrubs | Procedural and acute-care roles, badge photos | Choose a solid color and make sure they are clean and well-fitted in the frame. |
| Business attire / blazer | Private practice sites, LinkedIn, speaking bios | Solid colors tend to photograph well; avoid busy patterns near the face. |
If you are applying through ERAS
AAMC’s published requirements give technical rules for the photo (2.5 x 3.5 in., 150 dpi, 150 KB, JPG/JPEG or PNG, face centered) and do not state an attire requirement. Because programs set their own document expectations, choose attire that feels professional and that you would wear at an interview.
Practical tips
- Ask your employer or department whether a profile photo style guide exists.
- Check collars, name embroidery and badges for readability at thumbnail size.
- Bring one or two alternates if you are shooting with a photographer.
If you use AI headshots
With DoctorHeadshots, what you wear in your source photos does not need to be formal: per our FAQ, wear whatever casual clothing you like, and the AI generates you in lab coats, modern scrubs or formal blazers. Pick the style that matches your setting and check each image for accuracy.
Frequently asked questions
- Should doctors wear a white coat in their headshot?
- It depends on the venue. A white coat reads clearly as clinical on hospital pages; a blazer is common on private practice sites and LinkedIn.
